Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect on my first visit?

On your first visit, expect to fill out our new patient paperwork and spend about 30 minutes discussing your health with our doctor and undergoing a comprehensive physical exam. We will also briefly review any pertinent outside records and create a multidisciplinary pain management plan with you.

Is there anything I should do prior to the first visit?

Please visit our forms section, download, print, and fill out our new patient packet, controlled substance agreement, consent for treatment, and release of information so that we can reduce your waiting time. If you have outside records such as copies of previous treatment records, histories of previous injections and surgeries, and reports of previous imaging such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs, please bring them as well and we will make copies. If possible, you can bring the completed paperwork in prior to your visit for review, email a copy to info@floridaadvancedpain.com, or fax it to 904-461-9331.

I heard you provide injection therapies such as nerve blocks and epidural injections. Will I be able to have an injection when I come in?

Unfortunately we are not able to perform procedures on the first visit with the exception of minor office-based procedures such as trigger point muscle injections, shoulder and knee injections. These would be contingent on medical necessity, insurance coverage, and an available time to perform them.

I am in a lot of pain without any pain medication. Will I be able to get some relief with any prescriptions today?

Pain medications are generally divided into controlled substances including opioids (e.g. morphine, oxycodone, percocet, lortab) and non-opioids (nerve pain medications, anti-depressants, muscle relaxants, NSAIDs). We do not provide prescriptions for opioid pain medications on the first visit. We require a comprehensive evaluation and review of prior records, if appropriate, prior to initiation. We will, however, prescribe non-opioid pain medications in an appropriate and safe manner.

I'm transferring care from another provider who no longer wants to provide my pain medications and I'm due for a refill.

We do not provide refills of opioid medications on the first visit, regardless of your refill history. We still require a thorough review of your medical and treatment history. We recommend you continue your relationship with the previous provider until your care has been fully transferred over to us.

Back injections or nerve blocks sound like they might be painful. Will I get anesthesia or sedation for these?

The majority of our procedures are done under local anesthesia. It's generally not necessary to undergo sedation or anesthesia for injections such as nerve blocks, epidural injections, or joint injections. You can expect to be walking right after and no recovery period is required. Certain procedures such as stimulator implants or pain pumps do require anesthesia.
